Video On Demand – VOD

These days there are many VoD services. Some exclusively for sports, most exclusive to one or several TV/movie studios.

I used to have a TV subscription. But as I never watched TV anymore, I canceled it. It saved me about 18 Euro’s every month. I decided I could use that towards VOD. When sharing some VOD, to make it cheaper on the whole, and without a TV sub, I can support several services. I am home a lot, I am limited with my energy, so having TV series and movies on demand really help me to pass the time.

The latest VOD in the Netherlands is SkyShowtime. It’s a combination of these providers: Universal, DreamWorks, Sky, Peacock, Nickelodeon, Showtime, Paramount+ and Paramount. So one would think they’d have plenty to offer their subscribers…

Now Watching – The Good Doctor

My parents talked about this show a few times. So when I saw it on Disney+ I decided to give it a go. Let’s copy and paste a bit of info about this show 😉

The Good Doctor is an American medical drama television series based on the 2013 South Korean series of the same name. Actor Daniel Dae Kim noticed the original series and bought the rights for his production company. He began adapting the series and, in 2015, eventually shopped it to CBS Television Studios. CBS decided against creating a pilot. Because Kim felt so strongly about the series, he bought back the rights from CBS. Eventually, Sony Pictures Television and Kim worked out a deal and brought on David Shore, creator of the Fox medical drama House, to develop the series.[

New TV shows

Well, not ✨ sparkling new, but new enough. I mean series like She-Hulk, Star Wars Andor, Rings of Power and House of the Dragon.

The shortest episodes are by She-Hulk, the longest are House of the Dragon and Rings of Power. My ADHD favors She-Hulk as it requires less concentration to see the entire episode. Plus there’s not that much information in these episodes, making them a little easier to follow when you struggle to keep your mind at it all of the time.

Now watching – Cold Case

I always loved crime series, so when Cold Case aired on TV (2003-2010), I was hooked to this show. I tried to get it on DVD several times, but they never got released. There were issues with the music tracks of the episodes, making it too expensive/not possible to publish. So when I saw the series being on Amazon Prime Video, I immediately started it.

But then, after a few days, without warning, they took the series offline. To say I was bummed was an understatement, I had just seen about 12 episodes. So I tweeted about it and a friend responded with a link for a site that streams TV series. I checked and they have Cold Case, even with subs! So I started watching through this website. I wanted to watch it officially, but it wasn’t possible anymore, where I live… So I am grateful I can watch it online now as it truly is a great show and I haven’t seen it in quite a while.

TV time – Subtitles

I don’t think I have ever written a post about subtitles, so it’s nice to write about something new today. Even if the subject could be a very boring one to some 😉.

Whenever possible, I like to watch my series and movies on TV with subtitles. As I watch many English based TV, I also prefer the subs to be in English. I feel like reading what’s being said is still helping me to learn better English. And, when reading Dutch subs, I often cringe at the errors that the translations have. It distracts me too much and can even get me highly annoyed at times.

Watched – Broadchurch

I first saw it on Netflix, now it’s on Disney+ in the Netherlands.

Broadchurch is a British crime drama television series broadcast on ITV for three series between 2013 and 2017. It was created by Chris Chibnall, who acted as an executive producer and wrote all 24 episodes, and produced by Kudos in association with Imaginary Friends Productions Ltd. The series is set in Broadchurch, a fictional English town on the coast of Dorset, and focuses on Detective Inspector Alec Hardy (David Tennant) and Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller (Olivia Colman).

Now Watching – The Mentalist

Well, I am re-watching it again. I have 5 of the 7 seasons on DVD. A while ago it was on Amazon Prime Video and I watched them all. And now they’re on HBO Max so I decided to watch it all again. I really love the show. It has a good cast, great guest stars and a not too predictive story line. Even when watching it again and again, there are bits that can still amaze me.

Maybe I missed it the first time, maybe I just forgot because I do watch a lot of TV series… But it’s not like I start an episode and I go like “Ow this and that happens, OK”. Then again, I know a lot about all the Friends episodes and I still re-watch that now and again. I know what will happen, which joke will be make and it can still make me smile and laugh. Maybe I am easily entertained, maybe these shows are just right for me. I also love re-watching shows like Criminal Minds, Numb3rs and CSI.

Watched – And just like that…

The “new” Sex and the City, but without “Samantha”. I have binged this series (1 season, 10 episodes) all on the day I got HBO Max, which came out on March 8th in the Netherlands. I wanted to write about it but had a few other posts in the works, so that’s why I am sharing this one a tad later. But hey, I watched it, I have written it… And I have LOVED ♥ it! If you liked the original series, the new one won’t disappoint you. Unless you were only watching it because of Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones in the original series), as she isn’t in this one.

If you’re interested in why Kim isn’t in this one, Google will tell you all the gossip there is to find. “Sources” say this and that… I don’t want to quote any here as I’m not sure these are the real reasons and I’d rather not share “untrue” things as I hate lying. So the new reboot of Sex and the City with: Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon (my name twin and actually my fave of the “galls”, character wise) and Kristin Davis (who is an avid supporter of one of my favorite nature trusts: The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Kenya, please Google them if you love elephants, you’ll foster one with just a few clicks 😉 ♥ 🐘).

Watched – Return to Hogwarts (HBO Max)

Since March 8th, the Netherlands has officially gotten the HBO Max streaming service. I really wanted to see it as I do love the world of Harry Potter. Now, before I go on about this wonderful anniversary TV show, I want to make something clear.

Many things Harry Potter I love but over the last years, I have not been in support of the words spoken by it’s creator, JK Rowling. She made comments on different occasions, voicing her opinion on platforms like Twitter, with which I absolutely do not agree! While I do support something she created many moons ago, I do not agree with her current view on things. So please, I am aware of her very biased tweets, how much pain she spread to fans worldwide… First she created a world where it seems everyone has their worth, everyone has an important role to play, and then she goes on and writes these hurtful things about people that have helped her make her money, loads of that as well. Nope. So this is only about Harry Potter, about the actors who portrayed the characters (of which several have openly said the same as I am saying now: she created our fantasy world but we do not share her opinions).
