Gaming – LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean (PS3/PSnow)

I’ve had the game for about 8,5 years now. Bought it in September 2013 for my PlayStation 3 (PS3). I started it, played it a while with my ex. Then I split up with one of my exes, moved in with my then GF and gaming got on the back burner for a bit, as my work, love life and health took precedence…

Then, my HD needed replacement and I didn’t have a backup of my save files so… Together with digital bought content, I also lost my save games…. Which meant having to start all over again… ๐Ÿ˜”

After a while, my ex and I got a home and I started gaming again. But then I got a PS4 and the PS3 and it’s games got forgotten for a bit… After the divorce I saw the game on PSnow and thought: let’s start there as then I can use the PS4 ๐ŸŽฎ controller which I like better than the PS3 one… Until I checked the trophy list and saw that I had made some good progress on the PS3 so…. I made a poll on Twitter! When in doubt, make a poll ๐Ÿ˜‚.

So I went back to playing on the PS3 with the original disc. ๐Ÿ˜Š Unfortunately there are still many (known) glitches in this game, because of which I had to restart several levels a few times due to not being able to finish them due to the glitch ๐Ÿ˜”. You’d think that after all these years TTgames would have made a few patches to undo them ๐Ÿค”!

The screen grabs and videos I share in this post I made myself by using my old PC running the Playstation Now app. My old Nvidia card can screen capture, so I was able to make the shots and vids. There are many more online but I wanted to show my own. Unfortunately I cannot use my PS3 game save file to open it on PSnow, that would have been fantastic as then I could continue on either PC or PS4 (better controller ๐ŸŽฎ).

This was my third PS3 Lego game. I first bought Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga. Then I had gotten Lego Lord of the Rings (still need to finish that one as well). And then this one… It may be no surprise that when I got the PS4, I bought the Lego Star Wars The Force Awakens version. ๐Ÿ˜Š It was a normal 1TB Playstation (unfortunately no pro) with the Lego game and the movie included.

So I’ve been using my PlayStation 3 again for some Lego action. As I’ve stated before, the game sure has some glitches! Bad ones as well, as the game crashed on me several times. I checked the HD and it was about 50% full so enough space there. I really wonder why a big company like TTgames doesn’t make some patches to work out the links of their game. The glitches are mostly well known, as many complaints are to be found online. According to Psnprofiles.com there are almost 100k registered owners of the game on PS3. And I doubt these glitches won’t happen on other systems though… ๐Ÿ˜”

The first 4 movies have made it to this game, as the 5th wasn’t released then. The game is from 2011 and the 5th movie came out in 2017. As a player you work through the “story line” of the 4 movies: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Man’s Chest, At World’s End & On Stranger Tides. Every movie is divided into 5 chapters, making it 20 chapters for the story line.

Seeing all 4 movie boards

In the back, on the pier, you see the 4 movie story boards, where you can track your progress and see what you still may need to achieve.

The Curse of the Black Pearl

Movie 1: chapter board. I have done all the 5 chapters, so they’re all “open”. If you haven’t done a previous chapter yet, you can’t skip ahead… Once you have finished all the chapters, then you can mix and chose which one you want to play. You’d be wise to play them the second time in the opened “free play”, meaning you’re free to switch characters, needed to unlock all the treasures (minikits and compass points).

Dead Man's Chest

Start screen of the second movie chapters. In the bottom you see a glass bottle with a ship in it. That’s what the developer calls the “minikits” in this version of this Lego game. On the other side of the bottom you see a compass. There are 10 minikits in every chapter (so 50 per movie, 200 in total) and 8 compass finds (so 40 per movie, 160 in total). In the middle you see a darker “studline”. This line shows if you have gotten the “True Pirate” status in the level you’ve selected.

True Pirate is different for every level. There’s a certain amount of studs (Lego bits) you need to collect. There are different colors of studs throughout the game, yellow are the normal ones, then there’s blue and the best ones are purple (of course ๐Ÿ’œ). ๐Ÿ˜Š You can destroy Lego objects in levels to gain more studs. When you die you lose a few… When you got enough studs, according to the set number in the level, you actieve “True Pirate” status in that level. One of the trophies in this game is to get this status by getting the status on all 20 levels.

But what are these so called studs for then? You may wonder….

When you progress in the game, you may find “red hats”, which will help you play the game a bit easier. Some will double your total studs (there are several multipliers, making it easier to collect and gain True Pirate), some will make you die less easily (invincibility and red hearts), some will make you build or dig faster… All these hats can be found and then bought… You got it, with those studs! And you need quite a lot to buy some helping red hats, as the 2x stud multiplier is 500k and the 4x stud multiplier is 1m…!

There are also characters you need to help you get to the compass secrets and to the minikits, which you will need to find and also buy with these studs. So you need quite a few. And when you’ve bought all you need, then you may collect studs as there’s a trophy in this game if you have 888.888.888 studs!

Collecting Characters

I haven’t gotten all the characters yet, but then I’m only at about 18% of the game on this one. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Some people just play the game story line and after that, they’re done with it. And that’s totally fine… ๐Ÿ˜Š But for me, especially with Lego games, I want to try to get all the things done the game has to offer. Which means playing all the free play levels, collecting all the characters, red hats, yellow bricks, minikits and compass secrets. I want to get to the 100%. And on PS3/PSnow I can’t invite someone to share play with me, in order to have them help me with things that I can’t do myself. So I *need* to do it all. Or have someone come visit me to help me while enjoying a cold one on my couch… ๐Ÿ˜Š

The start of movie number 3, At World’s End.

Starting "At World's End"

This is the board for the 3rd movie. You see there’s a big red cross, meaning I haven’t finished the previous level so I cannot skip to that bit yet…

When writing posts like these I wish I had a good capture card (external) for my old PC. So that I could hook up the PS3 and stream it and grab shots and videos of me playing… There are several things I’d love to have to upgrade my sound and video stuff, so if someone wants to put me in their will ๐Ÿ˜‰…

So while I did finish the story mode, I unfortunately can’t show you yet as I’m not that far in PSnow and I doubt I’ll play it all again if I ever get to 100% on PS3. But, glitches aside, it’s a fun game. True to the movies, though no spoken word yet… That only came to later Lego games. The older ones, they kinda grunt ๐Ÿ˜‚!

There’s a couple of good people on YouTube that have helped me a whole lot with their Lego help videos. If you want to play a Lego game and you’re stuck, your best bet is to search for them! They’re called “Happy Thumbs Gaming”. Adding HTG to your search on YouTube will immediately show you if they have covered your selected Lego game.
